What if my junction box doesnt have a ground wire?
So what to do when there is no ground wire in your electrical box? If the box is metal, then you can attach the light fixture’s ground wire to it, assuming the metal box is grounded.
Which wire is hot in old wiring?
The black wire is the “hot” wire, it carries the electricity from the breaker panel into the switch or light source. The white wire is the “neutral” wire, it takes any unused electricity and current and sends it back to the breaker panel.

Untwist the connectors holding the two black wires and the two white wires together. Pull the wires apart to release the fixture and set it aside.

Remove the light shade cover from the existing ceiling light fixture. Depending on the fixture style, you may need to remove a finial from the center of the shade or loosen a series of thumbscrews around the base of the fixture.
