Top 5 Symptoms of an Engine Immobilizer System Malfunction

Like anything else that is electronic, an immobilizer system can malfunction and case some problems for you. Here are the 5 most common signs that you can expect to experience if there’s a problem somewhere in your car’s immobilizer system.

#1 – Unlocking Problems

Before ordering a replacement key, make sure you’re using the correct key fob for the car. Just because your spouse drives the same make of car doesn’t mean her key fob will work in yours.

How To Bypass ECU And Deactivate Immobilizer

If you do not have your car key or can not find your Toyota code card, there is the option of bypassing the ECU and deactivating the immobilizer that way. 

This is quite complicated and it would be easier to follow a video tutorial than try to follow a step-by-step guide. This video is very useful and explains the process thoroughly:

The engine immobilizer works due to the matching code found in a chip in your car key and the ECU. If you want to switch off the immobilizer, you will need to use the car door key. 

An engine immobilizer would be a pointless feature if anyone could deactivate it, agreed? That is why the key plays such an important role in deactivating the immobilizer.

Follow this step-by-step guide to successfully deactivate the engine immobilizer in your Toyota: 

Step 1 – Put the key into the lock on the car door.

Step 2 – Turn the key as if you were going to unlock the car but don’t open the door. 

Step 3 – Hold the car key in place in the lock for approximately 30 seconds. Leaving the key in the lock for this time will signal to the immobilizer that you are using the legitimate key to unlock the car.

Step 4 – Turn the key both ways – lock and unlock – and this action will bypass and deactivate the engine immobilizer. You need to give the Toyota immobilizer time to recognize the key so the immobilizer can be successfully deactivated. 

Step 5 – Keep the door in the unlock position and start the engine. The immobilizer should now be reset.

Automakers pack a ton of features into key fobs, including some that might not be explained in the owner’s manual. Example: You can start a 2021 Chevy Tahoe with a key fob that doesn’t contain a battery by putting the fob in the driver’s side cupholder. You can roll all the windows up and down on a 2012 Honda Accord while outside the car if you learn the proper buttons and key placement, same goes for a 2018 Honda Pilot.

Learn what the key fob can do and learn how to get the physical key out of the fob. This also means learning where the mechanical lock is on your door and how to access it. The lock is often hidden behind a faceplate to keep the door handle pretty.

Yes, this is homework, but doing your homework is better on your couch than in a cold parking lot at 2 a.m.

Method 2 of 3: Turn the ignition on

If the anti-theft system has locked up your engine, you won’t be able to start it. You’ll have to disable it with these steps.

Step 1: Check for the anti-theft light. It’s located on your dash and will have a blue or red light.

Step 2: Turn the ignition to the

Leave the key in position for about 10 – 15 minutes.

Often, it is the immobiliser’s security that prevents your engine from starting. When the immobiliser fails to identify your key, your engine will shut down. This could be a flat battery in your key fob that causes that the system takes a slow signal.
